MATT Thomson produced a stunning all-round performance as Walsden beat the weather and bottom club Ashton on Saturday.
Indeed it was a great weekend for the Scott Street club which followed the victory up with another five pointer against Monton and Weaste the following day.
At Rayner Lane on Saturday the weather had always looked the odds-on winner but Walsden managed to pull the game out of the fire.
Thomson set the ball rolling by removing the stubborn opener Imran Yousaf and then had Fahran Hussain well caught by James Rawlinson for 20.
Professional Janake Gunaratne had broken a 41 run partnership between Hussain and Ian Daniel, 23, ten runs earlier and that was the spark for a clatter of Ashton wickets.
Thomson, 4 for 45 from 18 overs, and Gunaratne, 4 for 20 - including six maidens - from 18 overs, ripped through the batting until the Ashton tail wagged a little.
Morspin Abid and Martin Lees put on 22 for the ninth wicket before Chris Dewhirst was introduced into the attack.
He bowled just 12 balls to finish with figures of 2 for 3 as the home side were dismissed for 111.
Rawlinson then perished without score before Gunaratne and Mark Hooson pushed the total along to 59.
Safar Zaman claimed his second wicket when he had Gunaratne caught for 16.
When Thomson strode out to the middle Hooson was 29no, when the pair returned to the pavilion he was still unbeaten on 29 and his partner had earned himself a collection thanks to a brutal 53 which included seven fours and a six.
He was especially harsh on Siraj Kadodia who bowled just ten balls but finished with figures of 0 for 25.
Within minutes of the winning run being hit the rains arrived and they were still falling when Walsden and Monton and Weaste arrived at Scott Street on Sunday.
Walsden found themselves facing Deon Kruis on the ground where the South African had been a very popular professional for two years before joining Yorkshire under the controversial Kolpak regulations.
Kruis was acting as a deputy professional for the Wood Cup winners as their usual paid man, former Todmorden professional Brendon Nash had been called into the for the West Indian one day squad to face Canada.
Nash, born in Australia, qualified for the West Indies through his father, a former Jamaican Olympic swimmer, but there was no happy return for Kruis.
He could do little as Gunaratne took 6 for 20 and bowled the visitors out for 86.
The Sri Lankan then finished unbeaten on 31 as Walsden got home with seven wickets to spare.
With the second team returning to the top of the table after their weekend efforts and the subsidiary cup due to start this weekend, Walsden seem to have found form at the right time to pick up some silverware at the business end of the season.
